Tom Dyson is a Professor of International Relations at the Department of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy, Royal Holloway College, University of London. He has held visiting positions at several universities and think-tanks, including the Centre for Military History and the Social Sciences of the German Armed Forces, the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and the University of Potsdam. In 2023 he was appointed to NATO’s Independent Scientific Evaluation Group.
Professor Dyson’s research interests lie in the fields of military innovation studies, especially military learning, and European defence cooperation. He is the author several books including Organisational Learning and the Modern Army (2019); European Defence Cooperation in EU Law and IR Theory (2013); Neoclassical Realism and Defence Reform in post-Cold War Europe (2010); and The Politics of German Defence and Security (2007). His research has been funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service and the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). He is presently Principal Investigator for an ESRC-funded project on military learning within the Dutch, Estonian and Portuguese armed forces.
